Broad Plain Minis coaches are keen to provide in-reach tag rugby coaching in primary schools, both to encourage kids to take up the sport, and to help schools establish their own tag rugby team(s). In-reach coaching has been provided to several local primaries in the past. Here is a news item from June 2011:
Broad Plain coaches have been busy delivering in-reach coaching to two south Bristol primary schools in June. Paul and Nick pitched up at Ilminster Avenue School, Knowle, to coach years 4, 5 and 6 following a request to help out with their national schools sports week activities. Each class received a 45 minute crash course in tag rugby, finishing in a couple of games. The kids were really enthusiastic - we hope this taster will encourage the school to start their own tag rugby team, and encourage the kids to try out with Broad Plain!
Emma Isaac, the school's sports co-ordinator, had this to say:
"Just want to say a massive thank you for the rugby sessions last week. I've had such positive feedback from all the children and staff and they have said they really enjoyed the activities. Many thanks Emma"
Marcel, Paul and Nick have also coached year 2 pupils at Headley Park School over four Friday afternoons, culminating in a 4-way tournament, narrowly won by 'Lightning Strike'. Coaches and kids alike had a great time, and the improvement in the kids' tag skills were noticeable over the 4 weeks. The year 2 kids are now well prepared to step up to the school's year 3/4 tag team in September, and carry on Headley Park's rich tradition of successful tag rugby teams.
The sessions coincided with the school's summer fair, where the Broad Plain recruiting display generated a lot of interest. Following conclusion of the in-reach programme, 3 of the year 2s showed up at Broad Plain for midweek training and really enjoyed themselves. Hopefully they will spread the word to their mates!
Headley Park's tag team coach Carol Morris, who co-ordinated the in-reach coaching, commented:
"From my point of view I feel that teamwork on the sports field can very often spill over into the classroom and this is an absolute life skill that prepares our children for future learning and employment. The competitve edge you introduced in week four was perfect timing as the children had been coached the fundamentals and then transferred them into a match situation. Well done you lot!"
Broad Plain coaches are looking forward to working in more primary schools after the summer holidays
Our coaches welcome requests from primary schools to carry out in-reach coaching. We can supply all the relevant equipment - all you need is a bunch of enthusiastic kids (with drinks!) and a green space about 30m x 60m. If your school doesn't have access to green space, we can arrange the coaching at the club, however transporting the kids is up to you.
The coaches provide this service in their own time, so unfortunately there is only a limited number of schools which can be accommodated each season. Contact this website if you are interested.
