1. Primary Age Kids

Broad Plain has a thriving youth section, catering for kids from age 4 upwards. Following some aggressive recruiting in the Summer, a big influx of kids at all ages means we have been able to expand our youth sectin from 2 squads in 2009/10, to 8 squads in 2012/13!. This is an ambitious club, and we invite kids of all ages to come and train with the youth squads, see if they like it, and then become part of Bedminster's Finest!

Tag Rugby- Reception and Years 1 - 3

Tag is a fast-and-furious non-contact version of rugby, with very simple rules and no set positions - just 7 players per side, all completely interchangeable. Pretty much like tag at school, except there's a ball to carry and pass, and a tag is made by pulling a plastic "tag' off of your opponent's Velcro tag belt. There are no scrums or line-outs. Tag rugby is suitable for boys and girls, and is already played in quite a few of our local schools. (If your kids play tag at school, why not bring them down to the Club on Sundays?)

Games are played over 7 or 10 minute halves, and scoring is frequent, with scores of, say, 10 tries to 8, not uncommon. This is great for the kids as they all get an opportunity to score! The accent is on having fun, but it's nice to win!. Kids from age 4 upwards are welcome to come and train. We have an Under-6 group, for kids up to and including Year 1, and squads at Under-7 and Under-8, for Years 2 & 3 respectively. The older squads play competitive games and may be away from home, but the Under-6s always train at home.

If your kids are in reception or years 1-3, and are interested in giving it a try, phone Nick 0117 9231937 or Mark 0117 9537845 for more details

Mini Rugby- Years 4-6

As year 3 kids approach the end of the season they are introduced gradually to the concept of contact and tackling, in controlled conditions. Year 4 kids can play contact rugby, but it's all introduced slowly, so for instance the Under-9s (year 4) play games with 3-man scrums and line-outs, but these are uncontested, until they move up to Under-10s, when they are contested. The rules become slightly more complex, but there is no kicking of the ball.

Our Teams

It's our aim to have a squad for every year group. In the Primary School Age Group we currently have an Under-6 nursery squad, Under-7 and Under-8 tag squads, and Under 9 and Under 10's squads. All the squads continue to grow, so we hope it won't be long before we have multiple teams in each age group.

Matches and Training

Most matches are on Sundays from around 10.00am, to include pre-match training or travelling if it's an away match. Teams are limited to about 14 fixtures per season, so if there is no match, then there is Sunday morning training from 11.00 - 12.00. Hot food is always supplied for the kids after playing. Occasionally the teams take part in Club Tournaments, where they get to play 3 or more different teams - again normally on a Sunday. The odd floodlit evening match is greatly enjoyed by the kids, usually on a Wednesday.

The Under-6s don't play competitive matches, so can normally be found training at the Club from 11.00am on Sunday.

Sunday training runs through the normal rugby season which is September-April inclusive. Midweek trainiing is offered all year round for the U7s, U8s, U9/10s and U11/12s, except through the school summer holidays. At present this is 6.30-7.30pm for U7s, U8s and U9/10s; 7.00-8.00pm for U11/12s. U6s continue to train on Sundays out of season - contact the U^ coaches for precise times

Schools

We actively recruit in all local primary schools, and have players from Ashton Gate, Cheddar Grove, Compass Point, Headley Park, Hillcrest, Holymead, KnowlePark, Parson Street, St Annes, St Mary Redcliffe. Southville and Victoria Park amongst others, so your child may have friends playing for us already! We also host annual tag rugby tournaments for local schools where kids are invited to come along to "give-it-a-try' with their mates

What Do You Need?

All you need is a pair of studded football or rugby boots, a gumshield and lots of energy! In the colder months warm and/or waterproof clothing is also advisable! We ask that a parent should remain on site whilst your child is training or playing. Come down for a couple of weeks to see if you like it, if you decide to stick with it, there's £3.00 subs payable every week for all squads except the Under-6s, who pay a nominal fee. Match day kit is supplied by the Club with players asked to buy club socks and shorts.

So What Are You Waiting For?

All squads train at 11.00-12.00 on a Sunday, during the season. There is also midweek training on Wednesdays (see above). You're welcome to turn up any Sunday morning or Wednesday evening, but it's best to phone the coaches beforehand just in case we're playing away!
