The first of two 30 minute matches was a tight affair with the hosts shading it by 3 tries to 2. Sam H's pace was always a threat and some nifty footwork led to him crossing for Plain's first score, with Blake also touching down after a good team move.
The second match saw SMOB exploit some big gaps in the Plain defence to run in 4 tries before Will pulled one back from close range after Rory was held up just short of the line. Sam and Blake bagged another score apiece in the final quarter. The final score (6 - 3) didn't really reflect the possession and territory stats, but was more to do with our weakness in stopping speedy runners carving through our defence from 30/40 yards out.
Once again there was no lack of effort and it was great to see plenty of popping to keep the ball moving in attack, and the lads teaming up to bring down the opposition's big unit!
Areas to keep working on: Tackling!!!! Everyone needs to step up and not leave it to the usual suspects. Passing!!!! Again, there were plenty of times when a simple pass out wide would have taken advantage of a 2 or 3 man advantage, but there's still too much running until tackled (and/or the ball is lost!)
We'll have plenty of chances to put some of these things right at the St Brendan's tournament next Sunday!
